SADIE

She narrowed her eyes. "We can't get into that right now. The number one priority is the babies."

How? What? I mean, I was never her biggest fan. But this? Blaine had said she'd gotten into trouble in her youth, but baby stealing, kidnapping, and murder? How could I not have known that Breanna, my sister-in-law, was capable of such horrific things? I never knew her very well since she and Blaine weren't close. He said she'd been a troubled child and had struggled in her early adulthood with staying on the right side of the law. He had insisted she had gotten better but remained distant from her. Is that why they’d kept me and had not killed me? Because I was the boss's sister-in-law? Had Breanna been using Blaine's boat for her criminal activities? The picture became more clear. Not perfect — it had a few fuzzy spots. But this explained how they knew I was a nurse and why they had kept me alive. Did that mean she would let me go? Would she really kill her own sister-in-law and make her brother a widower?

I hurried over to Breanna's side. "What are you going to do with the babies?"

"That is none of your concern, Sadie. I need you to not ask questions. If you keep your mouth shut, you'll be fine. Okay?"

The pit in my stomach told me this wasn't all going to be okay. However, maybe I could use her words against her. If I made Breanna believe I didn't think they would harm me because of our family connection, it could provide me with the opportunity to escape. But I didn't actually believe for one second I was going to survive this ordeal, especially since I knew her, the mastermind's — the serial killer's — true identity.

Shaking off the thoughts of my impending doom, I hurried over to Janine's side. Her eyelids fluttered. "My babies."

Breanna walked over, holding up the baby boy. "Not to worry, Janine. They're both doing great. But I think this little guy is hungry. We can have you try to feed him, okay?"

Janine nodded and reached her arms out for her baby boy. She stared down at his squishy little face, and tears streamed down her cheeks. "My little man."

"It's important that he feeds," Breanna encouraged.

Janine smiled and pressed the baby to her nipple. She winced, and Breanna assured her, "It may hurt a little at first, but it'll get better."

Janine said, "I read that."

Another baby cried out. It was the girl. I was trying not to get too emotional, but as an expectant mother myself, it was hard not to be. Everything Janine had gone through, I would go through the same thing in a few months. Hopefully, with just one baby. I didn't even know if it was multiples or the sex. I had never had an ultrasound done. All I had was a stick with a plus sign. Pregnant.

Breanna picked up the crying baby girl and walked her over to me.
